Hossein K. Nazari, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Hossein Nazari is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon with over two decades of clinical and research experience. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex retinal disorders, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and inherited retinal diseases.

Dr. Nazari completed his medical degree at Zanjan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Iran University of Medical Sciences. He pursued advanced postdoctoral research at the Doheny Eye Institute and the University of Southern California, where he worked on cutting-edge retinal prosthesis technologies under renowned mentors. Dr. Nazari later earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Texas Medical Branch, focusing on retinal vascular biology and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.

An associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Nazari has been recognized for his dedication to offering leading-edge diagnostics and therapeutics to his patients, training the next generation of ophthalmologists and vitreoretinal surgeons, and innovative research and technologies in eye care. His academic contributions include over 70 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on retinal diseases, surgical techniques, and retinal imaging.

Dr. Nazari has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including being named a “Minneapolis-St. Paul Top Doctor” for four consecutive years. He is a member of several prestigious professional organizations, such as the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

With a patient-cantered approach, Dr. Nazari is passionate about restoring and preserving vision through personalized care and state-of-the-art treatment. Dr. Nazari provides medical care for patients at our Bloomington and Hutchinson locations.
